The early parts of Danganronpa 2 - the prologue and the first chapter - sort of break my heart, because Hajime gets on so well with Nagito. He's thinking, Well, we're in a horrible situation, but at least talking to that Nagito guy calms me down. I hope I can get to know him better.
And then he gets to know him better, and it turns out that Nagito is the worst thing that's ever happened to his life.
Full disclosure: I do ship Hajime and Nagito quite a bit. If I say I ship two characters, it could mean either ‘I genuinely think these characters would work in a romantic relationship’ or ‘I think these characters would be a fascinating disaster, and I want to watch it all burn’. Hajime/Nagito definitely falls into the ‘fascinating disaster’ category.
I love that Nagito adores Hajime (and all their classmates) and expresses that adoration by manipulating people into murder; he just wants to help everyone achieve their full potential! I love that Hajime is simultaneously repelled by Nagito and sort of fascinated by him. Trying to keep Nagito at arm’s length, trying not to think too much about him, never entirely succeeding.
Hajime can't stand this guy! But he still cares about this guy's safety, and a part of him really wants to understand what's going on in his head. It's such an interestingly intense and screwed-up dynamic.
In chapter four, Nagito falls out of love with the residents of the island (TO MY DEVASTATION), and I think Hajime genuinely feels bereft at the sudden loss of Nagito's creepy adoration. Their relationship is so weird. I love it.
I once tried to work out how various Danganronpa character combinations would react to being stuck in a room with only one bed, including Hajime and Nagito. My conclusion: Nagito sleeps happily snuggled up to Hajime. Hajime lies awake all night with an increasing sense of dread.
One night, when I'd only experienced the first couple of chapters, I had a dream that I ran across spoilers for Danganronpa 2. The dream-spoilers said that there would be a Hajime/Nagito pseudo-sex scene at one point: a hallucination on Hajime's part. I was simultaneously glad to realise it was just a dream, because I didn't want to be spoiled, and a little disappointed, because to be honest I was looking forward to that weird hallucinatory sex scene.
Why do I have so many dreams about Danganronpa characters having sex? I think this is the third time the subject has cropped up on this website.
