Mukuro Ikusaba is a character defined mainly by her fascinating potential.
If you're not a Mukuro fan, you could phrase that less generously: 'Mukuro Ikusaba is a character defined mainly by dying before she gets any character development.' But I am a Mukuro fan, so what I see there is potential. If Mukuro had lived longer, how might things have played out?
Danganronpa IF, the novella you unlock in the 'extras' menu after beating Danganronpa 2, gives a glimpse of an alternate universe in which Mukuro survives, and it's a fascinating one! If you haven't read it, I can definitely recommend it; it's a good way to get a little more insight into the most mysterious character in Trigger Happy Havoc.
Even in the game itself, there are some interesting hints that Mukuro's starting to doubt her role as a member of Ultimate Despair. In her final Free Time event, Mukuro talks about her dissatisfaction with the fact that she's been pursuing the same dream since she was a kid, and her hope that she might be able to find a new dream. It's a shame that she never really gets the chance to discover who else she could be.
Dating Mukuro in School Mode is surprisingly cute. Mukuro worries that being around Makoto is making her drop her guard! They hold hands! If you spend a lot of time with Mukuro, you get a scene in which you hear her inner thoughts, and she is freaking out because she's having fun and she doesn't understand it:
It's like... deep down in my chest, I'm all... noisy. I can't seem to calm down. Why is this happening? Is it because Makoto's been spending so much time with me?
I've written about 20,000 words of fanfiction with a strong focus on Mukuro, which seems ludicrous, given how little screentime she has! But, as I've said, she's a character with a lot of potential. It's hard to resist the urge to explore that.
