(NB: this page uses the pronouns he/him for Chihiro. If you'd prefer to avoid that interpretation, feel free to go back.)

Chihiro. Chihiro, Chihiro, Chihiro. I really like Chihiro! What a sweetheart!

It is very difficult to talk about Chihiro. He's the source of a lot of discourse and controversy within the fandom, and it's genuinely impossible to talk about him without wading into that discourse to some extent; just by my choice of pronouns, I'm implied to be taking a certain side in the Chihiro debate.

Chihiro's story is such an odd one. It's essentially a trans guy's storyline; Chihiro feels pressured into living as a girl by the expectations of society, but he would prefer to live as a boy, and he's trying to work up the courage to do so. But, in fact, the game tells us that Chihiro is a cis guy, and we've all been arguing about Chihiro's gender ever since.

I can see why a lot of people interpret Chihiro as a trans girl; it's a very trans narrative! But it reads more as a trans male narrative to me. I personally interpret Chihiro as male because canon implies that that's how he would prefer to be perceived, but I think there's room for other interpretations out there.

Anyway! Although there are a lot of varying identity headcanons about Chihiro within the fandom, I think we can all agree that Chihiro is a delight, and that's the important thing.

I once had a dream that there was a secret Danganronpa ending in which Makoto, Chihiro and Mondo had a threesome over the credits, and I was frankly disappointed to wake up and realise it wasn't real. That's the other important thing, obviously.
